Explain this please! A character said it on 'Taggart' last night and obviously it means the same as 'Is the Pope a Catholic?' - but WHY? Why would it be obvious that Dolly Parton sleeps in a bag, because it isn't to me.

I don't think it would be obvious either. I'm guessing here but sleeping in a bag (being a 'bag-lady'?) is doubtless akin to sleeping rough (on the streets) and Ms. Parton is quite 'well-heeled' so would probably not have to resort to bunking down underneath the flyover and eating tins of cat-food. I didn't catch Taggart but by that token I would assume in the context of the conversation on the programme that it would have had the opposite inference than the 'Is the Pope a Catholic?' expression. What was the comment which preceded it?
I think you mis-heard it, it is "does Dolly Parton sleep On her back" - which would have the same meaning as "Is The Pope Catholic?" for 2 obvious reasons!
Darn, I missed Taggart. Was the delicious Robbie Ross in it?
just read kags' response and pi$$ed myself laughing at the original question again :-)
sorry jenstar i'm laughing at your expense i know. i'll slap my wrist for you
Nice one Kags - made me laugh. My own fave (apart from the one about one legged ducks) is "Does Rose Kennedy own a black dress?" but it is perhaps a bit dated now.
