...Fundamentally, what is the most common proviso for when your ears are burning?

I've, for years, believed that if your left ear is burning, your lover (or someone who loves you) is talking about you. If your right is burning, then your mother is talking about you.

In recent times, I've since read a variation that if your right ear is burning, then some is spiteing/criticising you.

What's the story?!

Also, is there any 'explaination' for when both ears are burning?
