Where does the saying 'Put that in your Pipe and Smoke it' come from?

Its earliest-recorded use was in a book called 'Americans Abroad', by R B Peake, published in the USA in the 1820s.

It's used as a 'killer' line designed to end all further debate on the point under discussion....ie "That's told you!"
