If you are very close to the family and particularly the girl, you could get something personal, like jewellery. When we went to one a fews years ago, we asked her parents for ideas, and like most young teenagers, money was top of the list. You can buy cards that have a little slot in them to hold notes, like cards for vouchers. If you are going to the actual readings etc, it is one of the most fascinating and moving things we have been to. If you are going to the synagogue and not familiar with it, it may be worth finding out whether ladies are allowed to wear trousers and/or short sleeves and you may even have to wear a hat. Sorry if I have given too much info!

ask the family if possible. otherwise money or tokens (hmv or book tokens). and coggles is right - check on the dress code, if they are very orthadox then you may have to dress accordingly. have a good time - they are usually great fun. ps - resist the urge to give her a lifetime's supply of prawns and bacon! ; )
