Why do many pubs have the word 'arms' in their name, eg. The King's Arms, The Macclesfield Arms', etc?

names.htm for a helpful website. Basically, the idea was that the original inn was under the protection of a particular noble family or referred to the original landowner. 'Arms' here, of course, refers to the appropriate 'coat of arms'.
