What it a bacon saver and where did the saying originate from.

'To save someone's bacon' means to get them out of trouble though they definitely seemed to be in deep difficulty. So, perhaps a 'bacon saver' is just someone who does that.
Alternatively, it might mean something along the same lines as a 'bean counter', who is usually an accountant who is very mean about the spending of any money.
A saviour or a tight-fisted administrator is my guess as to the meaning.
I should perhaps have added above that the concept of 'saving someone's bacon' originated in the 1600s.
A bacon saver, as an object, is a plastic airtight container manufactured by Tupperware designed to keep bacon in. Whether they actually enable you to keep the bacon for a longer period of time I have no idea.
