Originally, this phrase was used to describe the score in some games where the winner was far ahead of the loser. It came from the French (?) game of lourche, which is apparently similar to backgammon. Lourche was also used as a word denoting that you'd had a bad defeat in that game. Hence : to be left in the lurch - to be deserted or left when in difficulty.
