Where did the expression "scraping the bottom of the pickle barrel" come from?

I'm not sure about 'pickle' barrels specifically, but the general idea started as USA slang in the 1940s in the form: 'scraping the bottom of the bucket'. The 'barrel' version appeared nowhere in print prior to the mid-50s, so presumably the 'pickle' one came in the last 40 years or so - again, I'd imagine, from the US of A.
