Only deep meaningful questions wanted?
20 Answers
I asked a question the other day about an apostrophe.
I read the replies and differing opinions with interest.
It's something that crops up now and again at work and thought I'd get a fresh slant on the whole debate.
I was a bit disappointed though, when two ab'ers suggested that my question was somewhat trivial and unecessary by telling me that "The world would not end" should I not find an answer.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but surely the whole point of this site is to ask ANY question you might be puzzling over?
I know that some questions can get (quite rightly) hundreds of answers, whether they be about the meaning of life or what to have for tea!
I thought it was a ridiculous thing to say and made me feel like I was wasting people's time.
Don't you think it would be pointless to answer any question on here with a "Yeah, whatever" attitude?
BTW I know someone will answer "Yeah, whatever"!

I always thought that was the point of AB, To answer those questions concerning every day things you might not be able to find the answer to. Some times I ask just because its easier to do that than look it up. My apologise, I am a little lazy sometimes and other times I don't know where to look. besides some of the answer cover stuff you might not find somewhere else.
As for the meaning of life and its answer, There doean't appear to be one and just because some people here think that it is more important than your apostrophe question doesn't make it so.

hey crisgal, long time no chat!
I think using the phrase "the world will not end....etc...etc" should be used on a post when it becomes obvious that the questionee (?) appears fanatical about something trivial.
Whilst pointing out incorrect apostrophie usage IS trivial I think I know you by now to know that you certainly wouldn't get yourself in a tizzy over it, so maybe the people who said were just plain rude?

They obviously didnt comprehend the question cris -dont be upset -I have mused plenty times over this as both my childrens names -shortened -as they usually are -end with 'ss' -so if I want something for them i always put the apostrophe after the last 's' -I was always led to believe and I still maintain this ethos -that an ' indicates a missing letter whereas if its after the word it indicates either belonging to or duplicate and that's the way i still maintain my grammar.
I do hope this helps and dont bother about the pedatics -they get off on it lol

if people on The Apprentice can spend three hours discussing it, if Private Eye magazine can devote column inches to it and certain authors produce best-selling books (Eats, Shoots & Leaves, and all the spin offs) by including the right and wrong uses of it, then yes, a question about the apostrophe is obviously trivial, just like all the questions about Coronation Street and questions about incidental music on tv adverts etc. etc.
