Possibly the main broad difference between those days and now is that we have been only exposed to monotheistic religions for quite some time - Christianity, Judaeism and Islam. The Romano-Greek outlook was more akin to present-day Japanese Shinto in that spiritual entities could exist in a multiplicity of forms and could represent simple and complex concepts at the same time.

you have to imagine gods seen as being behind everything people didn't understand - the wind, the sea, love... As well as the big gods there were ancient spirits of the forest and fields, plus household spirits a bit like the oriental ancestral spirits. They really didn't go for the one-big-creator idea which has been prevalent in much of the world for the past thousand years and more.
