Three has long been a mystical number in the same way that seven has. In classical times, there were the three Graces and the three Furies...in Christian belief, there is the Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost...England shirts have three lions...and so on. The number has, therefore, come to be associated proverbially with all sorts of things...bad things coming in threes, buses coming in threes etc. There is a balancing proverb that claims good things come in threes, too!
