Thanks, seems to be more apt today given DNA and cloning - ie from spit than suggestions of older possible origin. Maybe it comes from the fact that it may largely be used in reference to loved objects and as such they both could easily be lavished with spit (kissed). Or they are so close you would hit both with the same spit?
