Is shorthand still taught? If so who employs shorthand typists in these days of word processors, dictating machines and the infamous 'standard letters'

Plenty of people employ people with shorthand skills. I am currently job hunting and have seen a few that ask for shorthand. I think it is mainly used for taking minutes of meetings now, rather than dictated letters.

Thanks both. I didn't think of these uses.
As Cheekychops says mainly for meetings these days, plenty of places still place a value on it.
I use short hand on a weekly basis for meetings. I would say it is still widely used
Courts and Parliament use a shorthand machine such as a Stentura 8000 - these are specialised stenographers rather than shorthand/typists.
