its more normally rendered Didakoi and is the true gypsies' own name for themselves. It means something like People. The Romany language seems to have magyar roots, and is similar to modern Romanian though with some interesting variations.
Eeek I am going to disagree with incitatus. Gypsies are gypsies and to call them didakoi is something of an insult. A gypsy is of 100% romany blood.
Oh and it can be spelt diddicoy, didakai and didicoi and it all means the same thing......slang for a traveller but not recommended for a true gypsy.
I think it depends on who you talk to....I don't doubt that you are right, but Ive met Rom who referred to themselves as didakoi!
And the spelling variants are due to anglicisation...Didakoi is much loser to the original pronunciation (Romany is not frequently a written language. OK it is now, but historically not)
Being the off spring of romany blood I am 100% certain if I had called my grandmother a didicoy I probably would have been blessed with 101 curses for life!!!

I think you are all being missed led by this word....
A diddicoy or diddikia both meaning the same thing ..is someone who has mixed romany blood in them...
i.e.. Where one parent is a gypsy and one psarent is a gorga then that child would be a diddicoy...
Where I come from it's a derogatory term for a person who pretends to be of travelling people , but in actuality is a bad egg and the real Romany people are highly offended at being referred to as a Didycoy.
