He kept a commonplace book in which he recorded anything that interested him. The Richard Hill who wrote a collection of carols,poems etc from medieval sources, published in 1908, is a different Richard Hill. William Walton did, however, use the C16 Richard Hill's words , ending an entry in the commonplace book ," be merry and glad this good New Year" as the refrain in a carol he composed called "What cheer!" in 1961.
