Why is Norwich, Greenwich, etc. ponounced "__idge"? Ipswich is pronounced "__witch"? Why? How is Harwich pronounced? Thanks.

harwich is pronounced har-itch. as for the others, i assume it's something to do with the evolution of the local dialect - i'm sure there are plenty of complicated academic theses on it!

Similarly with Bicester (pronounced Biss-ter) and Gloucester (Gloss-ter) but Cirencester (Siren-sesster, not Sirenster).
It may be from the original spelling. Eg Fowey and Mousehole fool people, but not when you know they were once spelled Foye and Mousel
As a tractor boy I can confirm Norwich & Greenwich are pronounced as ansteyg says. (Actually, it's more like Naaaritch)
