So, our friendly gorcer has a fairly extensive International Foods section, including The United Kingdom... recently I was surprised to find jars of Marmite. I see it referenced on here occasionally and wanted to give it a try. But, forgive me... it's a rather vile looking brown stuff in a very small jar and costs $5.65. Do I live dangerously and throw caution to the wind or walk on by to the French section and buy clafouti or bouillabaisse?

Many thanks!

You must, I repeat MUST live dangerously. This stuff is to die for. You havent lived until you've had marmite on toast!
Oh Clanad, you haven't lived until you've tasted it!

Marmite are currently doing ads here in the UK with the slogan "you either love it, or hate it" and it's so true....lol

I highly recommend buttering hot toast and putting a very thin layer of the lovely brown goo on it.
Absolutely worth every dollar. Marmite is food of the Gods (especially with cheese).

You'll have to forgive me, St. Asissi I clicked stars for you as well (of course) but they didn't show up like boo's... how can I refuse the adventure when so well recommended?
Sampling the travesty that is marmite, may convince you that there is no God clanad.

My advice would be to move along and find something edible.
Hi Clanad,

Marmite has no comparison, although some may say similar to Vegimite if you've ever tried it.

Marmite is the scrapings/by product from the hop/yeast/beer barrels and is fermented and boiled and and and... then jarred (sp?)

I guess you have to invest and make some hot buttered toast and spread a tiny bit on it....

You'll either love it or hate it.

I thought it funny the price of $5.65! you wanna see how much I paid for Old Bay Seasoning!!!! and.... Aunt Jemimas Molasses.

Happy Trying Anyway :D

Like you, Octavius, I don't think that's possible... so maybe I'll try it any way. If it's that bad and consists of beer barrel scrapings, I'll remember you in my will...
Just remember this... do NOT partake of more than a tiny tip of a spoonful .... or you may find your body leaves home. It is seriously strong tasting and has been known to reduce grown men to shivering wrecks.... lol...

Thanks for that warning.... but the little jar looks so unassuming just sitting there ... beckoning. I'll have my finger on telephone quick dial for 911 (our emergency number in the States) as I take the first bite...

Trust me, C...go for it!
Clanad,

Do not listen to those idiots above, I repeat do not listen.

Walk straight pass the Marmite. It is a vile concoction and once tasted you will think you have been poisoned.

Save your cents and buy a big Hersey bar.

No Clanad! Go for the Marmite, it is gorgeous. Hershey bars taste unspeakably awful.
If you've ever used Maggi Liquid Seasoning, Clanad, you might find the flavour of Marmite to be somewhat comparable.
Marmite is something you love or hate ...
I love it , so buy a jar as it lasts ages .
Clanad, Marmite is heaven in a jar!
As has been said, just put a thin scraping on a slice of toast.
Did I hear Marmite, mmmmmmmmmmmm. I need some now >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Have you tried it Clanad? You around to tell us? Or are you currently gargling the taste out of your mouth?

I'm also curious to know what else is featured in the UK bit of this store.
I just love it (just a little) mixed with butter and spread on hot toast
