I take your point, but I think the cliche refers to the fact that you can look for something you've lost in twenty places, and then it is in the last of the twenty that you search, so although your point is gramaticallly correct, it rather misses the length of time the proverbial search takes.

I've always understood the phrase to be 'in the last place you'd THINK of looking' which has a slightly different meaning
