Magpies
I am a bit superstitious, and I believe that when I see 1 magpie in the morning (1 for sorrow, 2 for joy etc) then I always end up having a pretty bad day. If at the same time I see 2 magpies, then I know I'll have a fine day.
Am I a loony?

However, you may be affecting your day by resigning yourself to a type of day that you might otherwise be able to influence. The same event viewed in different moods can produce very different results (see, I know it was going to be a bad day versus well it doesn't matter because it's going to be a fine day)
A superstitious friend salutes one magpie to ward off the sorrow. Perhaps that might help?
You are supposed to say "Goodmorning Mr Magpie and how are you today?" when you see a lone magpie.
I think the reason for the one for sorrow rhyme is because magpies mate for life. If you see a solitary magpie it usually means it has lost its mate. Sometimes on the motorways if a magpie gets run over its mate will hang around the body until it too gets squished by a juggernaut.
