my Dad used to recite this story when I was very young

I've been unsuccessful in searching a little story/prose that my Dad used to recite to me as early as I can remember (early 1950's) and I wonder if anyone else has heard it before. I can only remember bits and pieces of it but here goes:
"A friend borrowed my car one morning while I was away. I was angry no end but still a friend is a friend. When he returned it next day I said it was really most thoughtful of you to take it for a run. You've smashed the windscreen, still it needed a clean. And I noticed the steering gear is faulty and I think shall need a new clutch, but the horn sounds as well as it always did so thanks old man, thanks very much"
