In America they needed to chose a common language-Spanish or English. The use of Spanglish was seen as a compromise. The fact that most Spanish immigrants to USA now speak English can be seen as failure on Spanglish's part, though some Spanish phrases are now used. Try Bill Bryson's Made in America, that might help.
