What is the meaning of 'getting on the map" in the following sentence?

When it comes to getting on the map, the people of Afton, Wyoming know exactly who put them there. Rulon Gardner, the small-town wrestler who toppled an Olympic god.

When a person from a small town becomes famous, people say that he has "put (the town) on the map".  In other words, it was a small unknown place - known only by the local people - but then it becomes famous.  Therefore people want to find it on a map to see where it is.

"making it known" or publicising it

Bill Sykes in Dicken's Oliver Twist puts Snow Hill on the map because that is where he has his hide out and murders the unfortunate Nancy.

Snow Hill is still a street in London by the way.
