The idea is - a couple are two 'halves' of a relationship, and it's polite to infer that your parner is the 'better' of the two halves.

The idea of one's marriage partner as one's 'better half' has been around for a long time, the earliest recorded example in English dating to the 1500s. Shakespeare, too, used the idea, referring to his 'better part'', but the concept goes back to ancient times and the poet, Horace. Then, it could refer to a husband, wife or even a friend, but today it is almost invariably used by a man re his wife.
I Refer to my spouse as monkey.
It's only men who call their spouse the "better half" and the reason is that for once they are right!
My spouse says I am the better half. I agree. Who is right?
