Live life 'today' life is precious. Yesterday has gone & tomorrow hasn't hapened yet.
'happened'
I always thought it was 'today is (a) present' meaning now as well as a gift.
"... but today is a gift. That's why we call it the present." is the way I heard it. As far as the etymology goes, of course, it's rubbish.
