Heart rate

I am fairly fit at the moment - though currently about 2 stone overweight (I have shed 3 stone, 2 to go).
I am 36 years old and around 15 stone.
Last Saturday I cycled for 45 miles, the previous Sunday I ran for 12 1/2 miles (apparently for 'pleasure'!)
I am the gym at least 3 -4 times a week all cardio work - usually on the cross trainer for about an hour and then upright bike. I try to keep my heart rate above 140
When cycling on Saturday morning, I was with a couple of friends. One of them is a good couple of stone heavier than me (but also losing weight). He is also 6 years older than me.
On the cycle ride, I cycled to his house and we met up there (so I had already travelled about 12 miles). My heart rate during the ride was consistently around 140-150 rising up to 170 on hill climbs. His heart rate was consistently around 30 lower than mine
Is this normal?
