proud as punch

My son got home from school today and said as part of his homework he needed a picture of someone he admired and looked up to. I was proud as punch when he said
'can I have a picture of you please dad'
it brightened up my day after hearing some very sad news earlier in the day.

Does anyone know who the heck punch is? please don't tell me it is that woman beater from Punch & Judy. That's all that spring to mind.
