ringing in ears and head, help pleeeease!!!
6 Answers
i have been suffering from sinus pressure for around a month now, at the same time i noticed that my left ear was clogged up with wax, i took some sudafed for 2 days but discontinued it cos it made me really jittery and weird, when i stopped taking it i got a horrible ringing in my head and ears but thought that was due to the wax build up in my ear. Went to see doctor at the begining of the week and he prescribed me amoxycillin for my sinuses and gave me a ear spray because my ear was inflamed, went back this morning to get my ear syringed and my ear is now perfect, however upon leaving the doctors i noticed that i still had this very high pitched, static like ringing in both ears that seems to be coming from the neck/back of my head region!! its ok in the daytime at work but really annoying at night when thing are quieter and its getting me down now, could the sudafed have caused this? or would it be part and parcel of a sinus problem??? ive been reading all kinds of horror stories on tinnitus and im getting worried!!!! anyone with any advice??

Even after syringing I have a high-pitched static sound in the left ear and a low-frequency thrumming sound (like there's a continuously busy road a couple of blocks away) in the right.
Something I've started to do once a week since then is to use a dropper to put several drops of olive oil into each ear in turn, leaving it there for about 5 minutes (lying down with the full ear uppermost to keep the oil in) before letting the oil drain out, using cotton wool to dry the ear - cotton buds are not recommended. Whilst the oil is in the ear manipulate the tragus and lobe (and I also move my jaw - don't know if that's necessary) to make sure it gets to where it needs to.
The olive oil does not have to be a medicated sort - I'm using extra virgin oil from the cooking section of the supermarket. The GP said that works just as well.
If nothing else it does stop the wax from building up, and at the moment my thrumming is minimised.

thanks very much for your advice im just a born worrier i think!! i just dont like being ill!! ha ha, yeh the noise im experiencing is like a static high pitched squeel that alternates between the 2 ears every few seconds, it seems to be possibly originating from the nape of my neck??, these antibiotics arent doing much and i only have 2 days left on them and my sinus pressure is still just as bad, maybe its just down to the pressure and tension in my nose, head and neck etc, will have to wait and see :)
Sounds a bit like tinnitus, which is more noticeable in quiet surroundings. Basically that happens because your brain is tuning into a particular frequency more acutely than it should.
I had something similar following a recent ear infection. My GP referred me to an emergency clinic where the consultant found nothing wrong. He did say, however, that my ears could take up to a couple of weeks to 'settle down', to take the full course of antibiotics, give it another few days, then go back to the GP if it wasn't right by then.
You know what? He was absolutely right. I sat watching TV one evening and realised I could only hear what I was supposed to hear. :-)

i went back to the docs and saw a different doc he asked if the noise was in both ears or just 1 ear, i told him both because i thought it was, he said if it was just 1 ear then he would refer me to an e.n.t. specialist, so he prescribed doxycycline 100mg, he said the the left eardrum (that had the impacted wax) looked a bit dull, i asked what he meant and he said they may be some fluid behind the ear drum, anyways off the chemist i went and picked up the antibiotics and a steroidal nasal spray he prescibed for my sinuses, i have to see the doc again in 3 weeks if things arent better, the thing is i since noticed that the ringing is only in my left ear!! should i go back and tell him or finish the pills etc first??? i feel like i have been living at the doctors over the past couple of weeks!!!
