"bangs" in hair

i have a vague idea of what "bangs" are, but can someone please give me the correct answer?...

when someone is talking about hair and they say "bangs"..what do they mean? what are bangs?

I am an American from the U.S.A. when I went to the U.K. for the first time, I had to figure out when everyone meant when the said "fringe", in reference to hair. we use the word, but not in that context. We say "bangs".
