Wow, we've just had a rag and bone man come round our way. Not seen or heard a rag and bone man in years, I didn't think they still existed!
The last time I saw/heard a rag and bone man was in my old house over 6 years ago and I think he came at weekends not 5pm on a Thuesday! (Well nearly 5pm!)
Do you still get them round your way?
We have one come round every couple few months eash, when he rings his bell, it takes me back to when I was little. Mum used to give him a bundle of old clothes, etc., for a cup & saucer! ;o}
Blimey - I thought they'd all died and gone to Totter's heaven. Haven't seen one since about 1970. Ours used to be around on a Saturday teatime, just before or after the Corona pop man and Wilkins the baker had delivered. He looked like old man Steptoe. I was terrified of his dog...
and do modern rag and bone men still actually collect rags AND bones and do they still do that incoherent 'Rahhebooooooone!' call to get you to bring your stuff outside?
I tell my sister we got her from the rag & bone man in exchange for some old clothes & I was upset 'cos I wanted a goldfish. (they really did give them out sometimes)
:o)
Oh, Gawd, Robinia -so they did! I remember that and being terribly miffed that we didn't have anything we could sawp for one. Elf and Safetee would have something to say about THAT now, wouldn't they?
No Kim, it wouldn't happen now.
The next thing after the R&B man were the bags that were hung on doors with a colouring book & some crayons which you could keep if you put old clothes in the bag...that wouldn't happen now either, lol
Well they use a flat bed wagon instead of a horse and cart and you don't get any gold fish but they still shout out that RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANE at 100 decibels, when I helped my brother in law to fit his new kitchen we had several old appliances to get rid off the council wanted £10 per item, we put them out at the end of the drive the next day they'd gone.
