Tricky one! Calling all you bright sparks!
I am not sure where to go with this one, any help would be much appreciated! I'll put down my very confused thoughts as follows:-
I am trying to find out a little more about my gggg grandfather Joseph Bishop. He was born in about 1813 in Carlow in Ireland. At some point he turns up in England because he marries in 1840 (his wife, Betsy died in 1849 so he took up with her sister, Alice Hurry). He ran a pub in Wisbech and also farmed. He died in 1871.
With his second wife he had a number of children - all with the second name De Rippe. What is driving me mad is where this name came from.
The best I have been able to come up with is a baptism in 1805 in Dublin - Joseph, son of Joseph Bishop and Mary Darippe. So the Darippe thing fits. I don't trust this entry though because a) the birth would be horribly wrong and b) this was submitted by a member of the LDS rather than transcribed.

Firstly the name DeRippe in England appears to originate in the Wakerley/collyweston area of Northants which is only about 30 miles from Wisbech where Joseph ended up. Secondly, the Hurry family seem to have had quite an extended family circle and they all seem to inter-marry and leave money to each other. In a family will there is a reference to Joseph Bishop. However, this wouldn't be my chap since the will was proved in 1815 (but could possibly have been his father).
I know the De Rippe name is not a Hurry name because despite my theory that they were either Huguenots or Walloons that would have been a couple of hundred years earlier.
THe only other theory I have is that the Hurrys were all tenant farmers on the Duke of Bedford's land. He also had significant areas of land in Ireland. I wonder if the Bishops went to Ireland as his servant?
I'm just completely befuddled now and don't know where to go next!!!!
Help, please!!

I think St Martins is Holborn in London Craft - there seems to be a small number of DeRippes there.
I am not entirely sure he and Alice actually got married. Unfortunately, my original notes are in a box somewhere so I can't be sure they actually got wed!
Lumination - this is just from the Census records, probate records and parish registers. Oh and the familysearch.org site. But I only use the latter to take me to the originals.

If he ran a pub and farmed he was possibly a tenant as you say, have you checked the land tax assessments (1790-1824) to see if you pick up the surname in that area? (at CRO but also on the familysearc.org). The LTAs show tenant and landlord,
Is it more likely that the Joseph Bishop in Dublin in 1805 was a farm bailiff working on one of the Duke of Bedfords estates over there? Or he could have even been in the Army there at that time. Have you found other children baptised in Dublin to the same parents or maybe elsehwre to the same parents that might suggest a military or colonial role?
