Barrack Obama, the honeymoon endeth?
Hello everyone, been a while since I've asked a question! Anyway I think Obama has made some mighty progress in things like healhcare etc. However even his own side and the more liberal voters seem to be vey unsuportive at the moment, surely they wouldn't rather have a republican. Ingratitude or the pragmatism of politics? Do you think he'll get a second term? Has a sitting President ever failed to get his party's nomination?

Considering his electioneering was brilliant, his communication with the voters since has been very poor. He introduced a tax cut recently and instead of getting the credit, nobody noticed. There is still time to turn things around, though I expect the Clintons are ready to pounce.
The present Government inherited a mess. Where we probably differ, is that I believe the recession and banking crisis was a global phenomenon, and you blame Gordon Brown.
Obama appealed to the very poorest and most diadvantaged in American society and they elected him hoping for better things. So far he has not delivered.

Gromit our debt is vast because GB and TB failed to control the unbridled spending spree especially in the housing market. Even in their last year they signed up contracts costing billions . One of the reasons this coalition has gone ahead with the new carriers was because Labour guaranteed the contracters would be paid even if they were scrapped. So in the midst of the global crisis Labour was still throwing money around . That's why many blame GB he could/should have reined it in . What has partially saved us is we don't have the Euro which enabled our currency to fall in value . It is a global crisis but we and the US have been hardest hit because in both cases we let credit rip. .
Modeller,
The carriers were commisioned long before the fanancial crisis hit. As it was, it was a cut in that we were scrapping 3 old carriers and replacing them with 2 new ones.
The UK was hit hard by the fanancial crash because we relied more on fanancial services earnings more than our European cousins. In the 1980s, our manufacturing base was left to whither and nice clean service industries were encouraged. Germany, which still has a strong manufacturing base is booming with strong exports while we are left with toxic banks.

It took Dubya 8 years to get the US into such a mess so it's going to take Obama more than 2 years to try to undo the damage. He may well be a one-term president and that would be a shame, especially if what takes over is the dangerous Palin woman. Dan Quayle seemed quite sharp and intelligent by comparison. As for that Palin voice....OMG...shrill or what?
