The first rule when you're playing Lady Bountiful is to do good by stealth.
I saw that. A very nice thing to do. The officer knew the woman.

My favourite American Police story this week was the one where the cop stopped a car that went through a red light. The car was headed to the Hospital and was driven by the wife of a man who was having a servere asthma attack and couldn't breathe. The car was stopped 2 minutes away from the hospital. The policeman detained them until an ambulance turned up, even though they could have quickly driven to the hospital. That delayed them for 10 minutes, and the man died.

Wow, that was an inadvertant example of a sanitised news report.

It's unfortunate that the South is tarred with a broad brush. Having spent a great deal of time with Grandparents in various southern areas, I found (and still do) that kindness and consideration towards others (regardless of race) is the rule rather than the exception as assumed in recent news stories.

It's ironic, in fact, that Mr. Garner lost his life on Staten Island, NY.

Generally, in the South, good manners is the rule. I grew up knowing many black families. I was severely admonished if, after meeting one on the street or in the neighborhood, if I didn't remember my "manners" and refer to the man and wife as Mr. or Mrs.

I'm not naive enough to believe racism doesn't exist in that section of the U.S. But I do know there's another side of the story… and racism does exists elsewhere as well.
