Superstition about the new moon

As a kid I was told it's bad luck to catch your first glimpse of a new moon through glass. It was fine to look at through the window as much as you'd like if you'd already seen it outside but that first glance shouldn't be through glass.

My relatives were fairly sane and as far as I know not in a coven so has anyone else heard this superstition or have any clue what the reason for it would be?!

You're not alone. I've heard of it, but have no idea why it should be unlucky. Slight problem anyway, now that I wear spectacles!
