Whatever became of gravy browning?

My mum always had a bottle of this sticky brown liquid in the kitchen cupboard. Anne's post about Bisto made me remember it.
I've heard stories that ladies in the wartime stained their legs with gravy browning to fake tan-coloured stockings. Must've got all the dorgs in the street following them...

Tesco sell it - I prefer browning as it doesn't alter the flavour of the dish.

Since the advent of Bisto granules and Oxo cubes gravy browning died a death. It's true that ladies dyed their legs with browning and also drew a line up the back of their legs as fake stockings with seams in. I wasn't very old then but MrAsks' much older sisters did.

I always use gravy browning - made by Crosse & Blackwell.
Sainsburys and Tesco sell it - it gives flavour and colour to the gravy.

i have a sticky half bottle of it in my cupboard, rarely use it these days although it does colour a stew/mince nicely to make it look more appetising.

I remember my grandmother burning sugar on a spoon over the gas stove (till it was black, I presume charcoal) and using it as a substitute when she ran out of browning!
