The sole plate of my steam iron has suddenly become very black looking.
Can anyone suggest how I might clean it, without damaging it?

If it's not too bad damp a cloth with white vinegar and rub it over the sole plate- a bit cheaper! When the iron is cold.

Lakeland do an iron cleaner called Faultless for £5.25
I do mine with a nearly dry Brillo Pad, then wipe it with a damp cloth.

Two methods I've heard of but not tried is
1. Toothpaste &
2. Make a paste from baking soda and white vinegar
Whichever you choose use an old tooth brush to apply and remove with a damp cloth
smoneybags. that is fine as long as the Iron does not have an Aluminium sole plate, Brillo will scratch Aluminium and it will loose it's shine so it does not ride over the clothes so smoothly.
