from wktiionary- can also be spelt mither
possibly derived from the Welsh word moedrodd meaning to worry or bother. Possible alternatve from the Welsh '"meidda"' - to beg for whey or perhaps "meiddio" - to dare or venture. Bear in mind that the dd in Welsh corresponds in sound to the "th" in mither.

Thanks for that information. I suppose it is a leftover from the period before the Saxons invaded, pushing some of the Welsh up into what is now Cumbria Cheers Nezz
people mostly say mither, but i have heard some say mider too

mither is reserved for mother, or the elusive moomeh
I haver always thought it was a corruption of the word Moider, also spelt Moither.
