In other countries the word kettle can also mean a small cauldron,used for boiling or stewing,but it probably comes from a fish kettle,which is a long narrow metal cooking dish, to cook whole fish ie a salmon.

Not just in other countries, Vulcan. The cast iron cauldron was also known as a kettle in the UK, and its shape gives us the name for a ''kettle-drum''
