How do you explain the Jock bit with LIVE? The answer should be a Scots word. Seems to be VIVE (vivers minus rs)

I thought it was fire. (Stokes a fire) But that does not help with the rest of the clue.

The dictionary shows feed or fuel as the meaning. Also George Stokes was a physicist.

It's definitely VIVE, as Quizmonkey says. It's a Scottish word meaning lively, full of beans, and VIVERS is a Scottish word for food, minus R (abbreviation for Recipe) S (abbreviation for Stokes). All in Chambers
