from page 20 of todays guardian

no wonder this country is going to the dogs even the trams in manchester come from abroad
few weeks back a tram had a bump with a car, they sent the tram to austria to get it repaired
wonder if tesco and asda will open some more stores so the skilled workforce can stack the shelves

There are facilities in Manchester to repair trams, but the accident to the new tram (the yellow one) was not minor, it damaged the structure of all three carriages. Insurers are paying for the transport to Austria and repairs.
Ironically, the yellow trams are built by in Austria by Bombadier, the company that failed to get the contract in your link.

I didn't realise that! I wonder if the continued expansion will generate more jobs. I have to say, I did wonder at the potential work that is going to need to be done and upheaval caused for the second city crossing for...one stop....though if it generates jobs that's something. Based on the Media City saga and now delayed Chorlton line opening I'm not holding my breath though.
I have to say the new line out your way makes me dizzy criss crossing and such, can't see how it will save much time either seeing as most of it is on the main road anyway.

The Second City Crossing is designed to cope with the increased use of the system and alleviate what will be a bottleneck. The proposed route is odd. A more sensible route for southern section trams into Victoria would be up Deansgate, but that would be more disruptive. The route up Cross Street involves moving the Cenataph, which won't be popular.
proably the same now jenna firms put in a tender and if they win they get the job

I know DrFilth, a victim of its own success.
For safety reasons, they cannot get anymore trams along Moseley Street and Piccadilly at rush hour. The Second City Crossing will mean a lot more trams can be got through the City Centre on two lines instead of the present one.

I can definitely see the benefit of getting more trams to run through, they could do with it to increase the amount of trams they can get on the lines as it is let alone with all the new lines to be. Just seems a shame that the route isn't more beneficial in other ways with say more stops across a wider reach across the city rather than just the one by Exchange Square which is only a few minutes walk from other stops at Victoria and Shude Hill.
I guess they are so limited with space though and at least have had Cross St/Corporation St nearly enough pedestrianised for some time now and I imagine Deangate would an absolute no, insufficient space, too much traffic already and so many events.
I'm not so keen on the new trams. They might look a lot swankier but so much harder to get a seat now, even when it's quiet, all standing room with little room to sit and I find they are a lot bouncier on the lines (well from side to side). I don't get the tram as a commuter anymore since I moved but still get them quite often. Definitely don't miss trying to get home when the football was on at Old Trafford!
