I'm sure this should be grin from Lohengrin?
21 down Sisters whose origin is in old Scandinavian largely (5) N _ R _ S
is the answer noris (I in nors(e) ?) and if so why?

21d Norns - n(orns) (their origin, in) 'nors(e)'
Norns ?
too late to the show, sorry.
Preposterous can mean (rarely) "...inverted...having or putting the last first..."

So 'Grin' should be ok, though it's an odd clue to my mind?..

Perhaps someone else can parse it better for you

Thank you Lie-in King & mamyalynne
Norns I found on the net, a bit obscure methinks!
Think GRIN is fron RING (following Lie-in King) rather than Lohengrin.
Good grief! Thanks, stymied - can't believe I missed that :-(
