I am wondering about that one as well.
I'm thinking thus as so

+ a lam - lam being to clock or bash someone ?
th a lam us
thus = so
a lam = a clock (lam and clock can both mean strike)
So = thus
Clock = alarm

TH - ALARM - US

..... best I can do, not perfect tho'
so - thus inside is a lam. to clock someone is to hit them as is lam
ooops, much better answers beat mine all ways

thanks all - if I didnt know that thalamus was part of the brain i would never have got the answer
As said before, SO= THUS
Part of a clock =ALA(R)M- Part of a clock.
Therefore, THALAMUS
Penelope2. You cannot explain the "r" in alarm, therefore the reasoning is incorrect.

a lam ie hit is more correct.
'Clock is placed in part' . Part of an 'Alarm' could be ALAM excluding the (R). Lay money i'm right. Cheers.
"part of the brain" is the definition i.e.thalamus
the wordplay is that a lam (a clock) is placed in thus (so)
Disagree Penelope2! But there's no point arguing the toss, we all know the answer is correct! Unless we get the setter on here to explain his reasoning, and that's not going to happen! lol

:-))
Hi bulliver, looking at the wordplay, consider it as:-
So,a clock is placed in part, of the brain.
Just a thought. Cheers.
Hi nilesquimby, yes and that what makes cryptics so annoyingly obsessive, the different interpretations that solvers come up with. Will still be doing Xwords tomorrow whatever. Regards.
Penelope2. There is no room in cryptic for different interpretations. You are either right or wrong. On this occasion you are wrong.

I know alarm fits. without the "r", but unless you can properly explain the "r" it is wrong.

Bulliver is correct. As am I.

Sorry to be pedantic. :-)

Hi quizzerOi and nilesquimby, no you haven't opened 'a can of worms' just a healthy debate about interpretation of clues, surely that's what Cryptics are all about. I love 'em.
