Ia is SOUP. Am I missing something? This does not appear to be cryptic

Also, is " possibly reading" taken as R in 9a a common convention?

and 5d has CURED for smoke. Shouldn't it be SMOKED in the clue

The clue has "did smoke," so cured does fit.

And I don't know about Great Britain, but here in the US, we refer to the 3 "R"s - reading, writing and 'rithmatic.
