25a BARBARA

BARB and ARAB are both words for a horse
from west and east means that one is written forwards and the others backs and they share the common B in he middle

BAR-B-ARA
25a Barbara - 'barb' (horse) + 'arab' (horse, from east [right]), meeting in centre

17d Departed (quit) - 'part' (some, in) 'deed' (act)
