I have been told that a first class letter can take between one and three days, and a second class letter between three and five days !! Has anyone had a first class letter delivered as late as three days later ?? To the same country ??

Royal Mail's own website says 1-2 days for 1st class and 3+ for 2nd class: http://www.royalmail....l-delivery-options-uk
However, I know that any mail posted to my parent's house in commuter-belt Surrey, not far from London, when posted 1st class can sometimes take up to three days to be delivered. This is because the local area delivery office in their area (Guildford/Woking) decided to introduce deliveries on alternate days, so 1st class post is taking longer to arrive. No consultation with the public, this was just a decision made by Royal Mail! I'm not sure whether it is still happening but I think it is a bit of a cheek when you are paying for 1st class post and expecting it to arrive within 1-2 days.
Yes, all my post is taking well over a week to get here at the moment.
Postdog - they need you back.

Standards are slipping - 3 days from the bank to here - all of 4 miles......though I managed to get a 1st class letter to Edinburgh and Cambridge within 2 days. However, then they let themselves down with a 4 days from Salsbury and another local 1st class one for a new accout cheque book sent out in Thursday and not yet arrived - to the point that the bank covered a bankers cheque charge this morning......
My post takes ages, I reckon definitely more than 3 days and that's if they can be bothered to look at the address to make sure they have the right house, it's shocking how often it's wrong.
If I send post from where I live in Lincolnshire, either first or second class, it arrives next day to almost anywhere except london and area around the M25.
If I post from London, then it arrives anywhere several days later. probably the volume of post, but yes, the service is getting worse by the day.
I sent a recorded delivery from Yorkshire to Wales last November. It still has not arrived. Nor has anyone signed for it. I complained to Royal Mail who informed me. "It goes through the ordinary mail system until it gets to letter box then it is signed for" Only no one signed for it because it did not arrive. Post office said "you should have sent it special delivery" This service costs £5 something for letter weight. While I would never call a post man a thief I think some possibly are. I would be interested on Postdogs take on this.
£5 for special delivery? I have a special delivery waiting for me at the sorting office, it has got to be something bad if someone has paid that much to send it to us.
Our post used to be really good and over the past two months it has been shocking... I think there is something going on at our sorting office though. Either that or the postman we inadvertently got in trouble about has got it in for us.
2 weeks for a 1st class letter to reach someone for a friend. When he complained to RM he was told, "it was just one of those things that happen!!"
Not necessary Sher it could be money.
I don't care what anybody says about Royal Mail.
I sell on ebay and have sent stuff all over the world, and I have NEVER, EVER, had a parcel go missing.
Hi MM - track records says it is something bad! Can't/won't get it till Wednesday now as I have stuff to do (thing 2 has speech therapy tomorrow with a new person, hope it has some sort of effect as we have hit a brick wall).
Good luck on the S/T Sher wish I could help ♥
TheWinner, I sell worldwide on eBay and most stuff is fine but I have problems with China and Hong Kong items often get lost, so now I only send to those places by International Signed for.
The Royal Mail does not guarantee delivery times for 1st and 2nd class even if it is recorded . The times are just an estimate, ONLY Special Delivery has a garanteed time but as has been said it is over £5 just for a letter.
Lucky you TheWinner. I have had several parcels go astray (stolen?) and just try to get something back for them. Almost impossible.
Starbuckone, I am amazed when people tell me they have had mail gone missing. Is it because they don't put on the senders address? Is it because it isn't addressed properly? I don't understand how this could be.
Agree Star to get anything back they want receipts on the costs of items.
Oh yes.
EDDIE51, I haven't sold (although I have bought from) to China or Hong Kong. I do have a friend in China and send them stuff on a regular basis. I have never had a problem. Maybe I am just lucky?
Winner, you are either very lucky not to have lost anything or you work for RM
