I wonder if anyone can help in confirming one I am struggling with:

1A An external whip with forceful retort (7) (O - - L - S -)
The only 'word' I can think of to fit the clue is 'Outlass', however I cannot find it as a word.

I think the letters I have are correct:
1D Unpleasant and unbelievably nasty (6) Odious
2D Fine for use on a temporary basis (4) Loan
3D With open mouth yell in terror (6) Scream

Thank sibton and shooty. I wish I could spell. I was thinking 'Outlash' and had checked this word in dictionary, but then typed 'Outlass' above!!!
