Quite a challenging puzzle this week, between extra letters, clashes and redundant definitions - and one completely normal clue. An inspired guess at the 11-letter across led me to the quote and lots of working backwards to make sure it all comes together. I thought this was Listener difficulty/quality, and deserves a special prize for length of the preamble.

Hello dr b
Fortunately got the quote quite early on, had solved quite a bit of the upper half and a quick search yielded the quote and the author. Also had to work backwards to resolve the clashes. Definitely more complex than many EVs of late. I would have thought avatar helped!
Question Author
Except for the fact that my avatar is Mark Twain, yes, it should have helped. Somewhat similar hair, anyway.
Have virtually completed it and had the quote etc. fairly early. Assuming I have 23 down right ( which I doubt ) I'm struggling with both 30 and 32 across. I shall have another look later.
Have realised my slight error in 23 down. Have now completed it. I should never even look at EV after just five hours sleep.
I agree with all the above, and enjoyed this. A slight shame about some sloppy editing. 19ac should be (8), and to my mind the subsidiary indication in the clue for 15dn gives the wrong letter. Despite that, great thanks to Kcit
Good evening All. Have emerged at last from rather nasty side effects of an osteoporosis drug - zelandronic acid I believe it is called! Also there has been the organising of Himself's BIG birthday. Have muddled through a goodly bit of this week's offering and I think I have got the right quote, though haven't6 got the 11 letter across drb mentions. Preamble has me dropping off, somewhat similar to a uni lecturer from the far distant past who could raise a snore within 5 mins of beginning! It's the coloured entries that have me baffled, guidance oh geniuses please.
On another note, how is everyone these days? We seem to have got rather short on the N & Cing..................come on chaps & chapesses!
A fair old battle to fill the grid - still a few wordplays to sort out - my one problem is the clash in the third column - I have A + the four but that doesn't seem to be a word??
That one (A) is sorted now - devadolly -re your "post" - there are seven to find.
I am completely lost regarding this EV. Although I have solved a few clues and found some of the extra letters , i can not go further since I have only
ODQ 5
Can anyone give me very broad hints please. Thanks in advance.
Hi Shoni70!

The quote is in OQD 5. The keyword in the index is the 11 letter word which fills the middle row. I got into it by deducing 1 across early and "Asking Jeeves" to find quotes containing that word. The title of the puzzle itself is a massive hint.
Hi Shoni70!

I've just had another look at ODQ 5. It is doubly referenced in the keyword index, once under the eleven letter word and once under the seven letter word derived from the clashes. As I said in my earlier post the title of this EV is itself a massive hint, probably far more so than normal.
Shoni - the author is the last across entry - first letter E
Thank you all for your broad hints . I did discover the quote and the author in the end before i read your replies, and have now moved on considerably and found four of the clashes Thinking there might be another 3 to find would I be assuming correctly that one of the small down clues consists two clashes.
20 down is giving me the most trouble since i am of the opinion that cubit is the hebrew measure.
Must persevere since i have only 4 clues to solve.
A very tough Ev this time but hopefully I may be able to complete the sixtieth consecutive Puzzle. . Drinks all round .
I was very late coming to this EV and, like others, felt it was of Listener quality.

I took longer to 'spot' the rash than I should as I had the quote and the author quite early on.

DocHH - I take your point about the avatar likeness!
Hi Shoni70!

The Hebrew measure is not cubit but is a shorter word beginning with c.

There is no more than one clash in any word.
Hello everyone, just thought I would drop a quick line as the little fellas are having their nap (fingers crossed for a good hour of peace). The h-g has just started this one and is chuntering so I thought I had better bookmark the thread.

After a lovely afternoon yesterday we are suffering from a dull day today - but the spring is definitely beginning to, and it is nice to drive home in the light.
Hi All
I agree that this was quite challenging - a refreshing change from recent weeks. I struggled to get started, and it was thanks to dr b's avatar that I really got going. I actually stood next to the author recently (well almost - it was at Madame Tussauds in London). Funnily enough he was more popular than a lot of "celebs".
Hello everyone,
Like Novalis I was mislead by 23d, trying to use one letter as part of the quotation, making 30 & 32 across insoluble!
Devadolly, quite rightly you criticise us for a lack of N&Cing. Sorry to hear about your drug induced side-effects! Hopefully they are now resolved and new medication prescribed. So which "big birthday" did you have to bake a cake for? Any "big birthday" holiday planned?
I recall a Thermodynamics Lecturer at our Alma Mater having a John Peel like drone tone. On one occasion we all thought he said, "Ah, What's a Joule per Second?", in actual fact he had made a statement. It was "A Watts a Joule per second".
Pleased to see Jogler(s) return. Hopefully H-G will chunter less with inspiration from this thread.
Have been recording today, and am reading on a recording tomorrow. Time for a preprandial whisky, and will wash dinner down with a Crianza!
Hello all. A busy weekend refreshing my memory on Ohm's law for my daugther and inequalities for my son meant that this did not even get looked at until Monday. I realised I picked the wrong weekend to leave the EV until weekdays and I had a long mental block about the meaning of the preamble and entry manipulations. Anyway all finally fell into place rather neatly and made sense. Daffs out and summer seems to be on the way. DD pleased to hear you are feeling better!
Sorry have not been in touch earlier. Internet has been down since 7 last night. Thank you all for your responses and guidance but managed to complete everything late last night. HAD LEFT OUT A LETTER IN ONE OF THE DOWN CLUES AND THIS LED TO MY PROBLEMS. I also thought that this Ev was very tough.
Hope to have a restful day tuning in to the Cheltenham festival. A bit early for the strong stuff so I will have to do with a cup of tea instead.
