I mean really...I know that all newspapers have agendas, and they will publish stories to support those agendas - but this is now getting ridiculous.

The Daily Mail claimed that two thirds of British Muslims found honour violence acceptable.

The actual figure was 6% and to make matters worse, the figure for Asian Christians was 8%!!!

Seriously - what can be done about this? Surely this is deliberately stoking the flames of right wing hatred?

it is. I wondered about this claim at the time - it was clearly about Asians, nto Muslims (and I am duly impressed with the revelation that the proportion is higher among Christians); but I didn't realise the total fabrication involved in the headline.

But only 6% said they would use violence.

It would be interesting to know what they would do to ENFORCE this izzat if the honour of their family had been damaged.

If they would not use violence how do they enforce it?

Even forceably keeping a person (probably female) in the family home to stop them perhaps going out and seeing the "wrong" person is a form of violence.

So if they would not use violence then what WHAT they do?

what makes you so sure they want to enforce it at all, VHG? I believe families should live within their means, but I don't hold a gun to anyone's head, even in my own family, to make them do it.

VHG, you're moving the goalposts. The report you link to deals with Pakistan; the article sp1814 is discussing deals with Britain.

It just seems terribly wrong for a newspaper to deliberately make up stuff in order to spread fear and hate. I read that story and came away with the depressing impression that the majority of Muslims believed in violence against women - how many others reading the same story are now repeating that same statistic?

the DM may well have an agenda against muslims but the muslims do themselves no favours by the way they carry on. The DM doesn't have to work so hard for ammo does it? Their figures are wrong but it does not excuse the existance of the subject matter regardless of the percentage. To me all religions are equally deplorable so I don't care whether christians outwiegh muslims in their barbarity they are all as bad as each other.

It would be interesting to see the percentage of British men who think it is ok to attack their wife if she steps out of line. They aren't all drunk when they do it.

Their figures were not just "wrong." They were fudged. Made up.

Personally? I agree with you to some extent - there are serious questions about how we deal with Islam. I'm increasingly coming under the impression that, for example, we have a choice to make between supporting gay rights and supporting the religious rights of Islam - that we cannot do both. But we can't do that without an informed public, and the whole purpose of the Mail and its ilk is allegedly to inform the public. Carlessley making up figures in order to support a preconceived idea about Islam is disgusting, stupid and completely inexcusable.

Incidentally they were reporting on the subject, from a BBC documentary (Panorama).

I watched it on iPlayer - and the claims in the Mail (over 60% support violence against women in support of family honour) was simply NOT part of the programme.

It's just not right that a newspaper with a reach in the millions can get away with this sort of thing.
