away? united win would be an away win, away can mean conatantly, as in toiled away.
Question Author
Thought of that but not sure. I had W for win + AY (constantly) but can't place the first A.
I just thought it could be a double meaning.
Did you guys get 26A? I didn't.

Amazing, isn't it? Whenever someone asks for a solution you can't move for the queue of Crossword addicts anxious to display their knowledge. Yet when I, on the rare occasion that I am stumped, seek help, there is a deafening silence from the would-be cognoscienti.
Yes, I worked it out afterwards, Mike. I do the Times online and found I'd made a mistake when looking at score card. Had stuck"cooler" in out of desperation. Chokey's a new word to me, but nice clue.
Could the first 'A' come from united. (two items that are united become A ?)
Question Author
This still does not solve my original post.
mac44 looks to be correct in the very first posting so no point in repeating it
Could the first 'A' come from united. (two items that are united become A ?) In conjunction with 'W for win + AY (constantly)' ?
I saw your post this morning, but as Mac44 had given you the correct answer, did not think it needed to be confirmed.
Question Author
Well if that is correct then I'm very disappointed. I still don't get the wordplay and it is very much out of synch with the rest of the puzzle.
United win at Chelsea=Away
Constantly= Away
Chambers, Mike:
away
adv onward; continuously; without hesitation, stop or delay; forthwith; out of the place in question; not at home; on the opponents' ground...
So, yes, I'm with Mac.
Question Author
I grudgingly accept what you say, but I'm still not happy.
