Buying a faulty car

I recently bought a car, as I am not a car genius I thought it all seemed amazing. I got insurance and drove away, about 3 miles into my drive home my engine management light came on. I paid £835 for the car and its currently in the garage at the moment awaiting diagnostics to find the problem. I am led to believe that if this is the engine needing replaced I could be smacked with a £900 bill and there is nothing I can do about it because I bought it privately. I went to view the car with my friend, who she has a car, and she didnt notice the car's engine light was on when the bloke took us a wee test drive around the block a few times. I am so annoyed, I am not an expert at cars, this is my first ever car & I am still learning.

It maybe something not to drastic, there are a lot of things that can make engine management light come on so not at all necessarily the need for a new engine. wait until the diagnostics have been done.
I agree with Tony, an engine management light is unlikely to mean a new engine.
That would be my final drive Official, ask for your money back.
