A rainy morning here in the West of Ireland, but I managed to get the last copy of the Telegraph, so was able to enjoy this excellent crossword - not the most difficult grid fill, but an entertaining theme.
I don't have a Brewers here, but a few key words jumped out at me.
I did wonder if publishing a few weeks later would have been more appropriate.

Thanks to Jaques, and greetings to all EVers

Nearly there - I have a full grid, the theme and the 7 letter word - and the second attempt but cannot see the 4 word phrase.
Thanks slaney - and if it's still rainy with you don't forget there's a Competition Azed Puzzle today:

Thanks C but sun out now!
I filled the grid fairly quickly last night and found the 7 letter person, and after a morning of gardening I have picked it back up. After 20 minutes of grid-staring I must say I haven't the faintest idea which entry gets a "second attempt" or what 4 words lead to a "better start". Is access to ODQ or Brewer's needed to get this last step?

Hi dr b - I managed without, but am familiar with the theme.
The title may give a clue as to which answer needs to have a second attempt.
All sorted now - spent too long on the wrong theme and "of course" that also has a relevant event coming soon.
Grid fill was fine, but like drb the final steps took a while, partly because of lack of knowledge of some of the thematic material. Good puzzle though with fine linkage between a few topics. Thanks Jacques.

I'm in same position as drb and searching for the appropriate word to change. In particular I keep staring at 35ac - am I looking in the wrong place?
Hi haggis

No you are in the right place.

I think it was Ex President Bill Clinton who frequently was allowed to have a second attempt.

I should have seen the final four words earlier but got there in the end.
Thanks Jaques.
K
Am I correct in assuming that the final four words are as a result of the change to 35ac?
The amended 35a is the last of the 4 words.
K - thanks
I now have the amended answer and now searching for the other three words which I assume are either related or part of a phrase.
Haggis

I hope I won't be accused of giving too much away if I say that the words are the first four in the work - see your ODQ.

No you won't be accused. Whilst your help has been much appreciated, I did in fact just consult my ODQ before your last post and discovered the words. Had I been familiar with the 'work' I would have got there sooner. Thanks again.
Finally got there, but would never have done so without the hints here. Is it just coincidence that 3 words from a quote by a certain female entertainer with a related name appear in the grid?
Hmm. My first thought when the h-g finished the grid was of this work but when I checked our ODQ there was nothing that appeared relevant. Under the Author's name it did refer to two of his works as being in the "first lines" pages (and isn't this an irritating thing when they are not also in the main body) but they were not the one I was looking. I didn't check the rest of the first lines.... foolish me! So if anyone else has ODQ 6 and wants to check out the first lines of a particular work by this particular author, persevere in that section for the unreferenced one!
I have to say I am totally lost! So what's new you all chorus? The eastern side is looking healthy but the western is a desert, have 3 misprints and not a clue about anything else including your excellent clues. Am dusting off the DC.
Jogler, what do I do?

I have only the 5th version of ODQ. I am completely lost regarding the final solution of this puzzle I think I need more than a few subtle hints. I was very pleased to have completed the grid considering I had surgery exactly a week ago . Big C of the bladder. So, perhaps you can make me happy this week if i can finish this one off. Best wishes to everyone.
Hi Shoni

Hope you are recovering well from surgery. Good Luck.
If you have the 'second attempt' word, Google it with 13a and you should see
the relevant four words.
Get Well Soon Shoni, hope the rest of the treatment isn't too onerous.
Have finished the grid, found the person read all your hints tenn times and am still being totally thick! I cannot see how (or why) to change 35d and nothing I have tried to match with 13a throws any light. Have tried the appropriate volumes (to the 'person') and as jogler pointed out - too much to contemplate. Don't have an ODQ thyat gives first lines so stumped there. Am off to cut the hedge before it starts to rain again.
Wasn't the river pageant great, shame about the weather and the hyper-active beeb presenters...........felt they were very over-excited and should have been in bed hours before!
